Lumber Deck Cargo Loading Manual
This manual is intended for those who become involved in the loading of deck cargoes of packaged lumber, so that they may learn and better appreciate the numerious aspects assoicated with planning, the loading process, securing and care of the cargo during the voyage. The practices described have been developed on the West Coast of Canada and set an example for world standards in this trade.

The purpose of the manual is to clarify the various issues concerning the loading of a deck cargo of packaged timber. Loading and lashing practices are discussed, the regulation covering timber cargoes are described and the reason for deck losses are scrutinised. A case studey of major loss and damage confirms the need for professional practice.

The author has worked as a shipmaster and stevedore with a special interest in lumber cargoes. He has been involved in the trade since 1975 and is a member of the British Columbia Supercargoes Association of British Coumbia.
